In downtown Marysville, the City of Marysville owns an entire block called "Koester Block". This block holds a lot of history about the city.
Koester Museum is just one of these history holding sites. This museum is named after Charles Koester, who was an early settler and became successful in real estate and banking.
This museum is open to the public from April to October Monday-Saturday 10:00am-4:30pm, Sunday 1:00pm-4:30pm and open by appointment only after October 31st.
The museum takes you back to the lifestyles of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Marshall County Historical Society owns another part of History. The Marshall County Courthouse was built in 1891-1892. This museum also houses a genealogical research library.
In this beautiful Romanesque building you will find an impressive courtroom filled with oak woodwork, and stained glass windows. In the courtroom it still displays the original spectators benches. You can also view the sketches of the construction of the courthouse.
Baptismal fonts from early churches, equipment used in the gypsum mines and promotional items from county businesses can also be found.
The genealogical library has census, marriage, and naturalization records, county newspapers, histories of county towns and churches, and an index of burials.
There is a minimum $7.50 charge for genealogical research.
The library has a collection of nearly 3,000 photographs relating to Marshall County. Prints are available to researchers at a small charge. The library of photos keeps enlarging due to the donations of photos that are then scanned to make a digital copy.
Suggested donation to visit the museum is $2.00. Children are free.
The Koester Block is also the location of the Koester House. It is now a Mexican Restaurant called "Las Cabanas". This restaurant displays beautiful woodwork, very distinctive windows, and a very cozy atmosphere.
Also in downtown Marysville there is a Doll, Indian, and Arts Museum. It is open to the public by appointment only. Contact Lois Cohorst for information about the museum.
